Step-By-Step Photoshoot Outfit Planning With Stylist Jasmine Snow
When it comes to planning outfits for your family photos, it can feel super intimidating to get everything just right. But I’m here to tell you that the more yourself you are, the better! Coordinating always looks so much more natural than matchy matchy, and it gives you the ability to choose something you feel great in because you’re not totally locked into a specific “look”. That said, I’m sure you’re asking yourself how in the world do I even begin to coordinate?! Thankfully I’m a stylist and I’ve simplified the process in a few easy steps.
Step 1:
Pick a color palette (usually 2-3 colors). I can say confidently that I am a girl that looooves color, but for photos like this, stick to neutral tones or soft colors. It will be timeless and make the photos that much more beautiful when the focus is on you, not your neon top 😉
Step 2:
Mama comes first! Select your outfit before everyone else. When you feel your best, it shows and it will only help elevate everyone else’s look and energy that day. Remember fit is a key factor. If it fits you well and you’re not tugging and pulling, or itching, or worrying about shapewear, you will be so much happier!
Step 3:
Start getting everyone else’s outfits together. Just as you are comfortable in something you love; your family will be too. So think; if your daughter throws a tantrum every time you make her wear a dress, maybe re-think the dress and find a jumpsuit or pants she would be more comfortable in.
Step 4:
Accessorize! It’s easy to pull all the looks together to coordinate when you start adding in accessories. For example, if you are in different colors but you can find a belt in the print or colors someone else has on, you can add that or a statement necklace to your look. Maybe your husband wears a pale blue blazer to pick up the blue floral print in your baby’s outfit. During
colder months, you can use layering sweaters over a colored button down or coats as accessories to pick up the coordinating tones.
Step 5:
Finishing touches. It’s the small last details that really count when it comes to family photos. Make sure everyone has clean shoes, there aren’t any tags sticking out of people’s new shirts or pants, and any loose bra straps are tight or pinned back.
Step 6:
Take a photo before the real thing! Obviously dressing everyone before is completely unrealistic BUT you can lay everything out next to each other on the floor and snap a photo to see if there are any colors you think are missing or if something is just jumping out to you (not in a good way) that suddenly doesn’t work.
Ultimately, be yourself and embrace everyone else to be themselves too. These photos will live on your wall and in albums for years to come and you want to capture exactly who you were in that time of your life then. Most importantly, have fun!!
